Right after arriving from the airport and a quick stop to drop off our luggage at the hotel, Steve Sims, from Bodhi Leaf Trading Co., and my myself, were off to visit Coffee Lab. Coffee Lab is a experimental coffee bar created by former Brazilian Barista Champion, Isabella.
The Coffee Lab is no ordinary coffee bar. This nontraditional coffee bar has no counter and set up just like a coffee lab. There is a 12k Diedrich roaster on one end with sealers and basic roasting items, with a La Marzocco espresso machine and various brewing methods on the other. Most drip coffee is brewed by a AeroPress coffee maker.
At Coffee Lab we had great company, which included: Tim Wendelboe, World Barista Champion from Norway, Raul Rodas, Guatemalan Barista Champion and 2nd in the World, and our own Barista Champion, Heather Perry, along with who's who of producers and cuppers.
After a short visit we were off to Brazil Coffee Expo (Espaço Café Brasil). Klatch's Director of Training and Consulting, Heather Perry, taught a Latte Art workshop, teaching techniques and tricks to make the perfect latte art. Heather also participated in many coffee cuppings and spoke at a seminar addressing the market opportunities in the coffee industry through the eyes of barista champion.
The coffee expo was outfitted with equipment companies, a barista competition, educational seminars, hands on workshops, and much more. The distinctive difference was that all coffee beans being featured were from Brazil. Brazil is a coffee producing country that does not allow green coffee beans imported from other countries, which was ideal in my eyes because I came to Brazil to source great Brazilian coffee.
During the many cuppings I participated in I found many good coffees but the best was a pulp natural from our partner Marcos Croce from Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza (FAF). This natural was sweet, bright, clean and simply delicious. Tim Wendelboe loved it so much he wanted to have sex with it. Not sure what to say after that statement, so I will end it here with more to come on our trip to Brazil.
