While I have been to Colombia many times, this was my first trip to Medellin. It is a beautiful city surrounded by mountains everywhere. I was here for a special cupping of the top 20 from 2800 coffees form the Colombian state of Antioquia.
With coffee growing as high as 2100 meters, great soil and weather, some gems were sure to be found and the day did not disappoint.
The winning coffee was fantastic and reminded the judges of a great Ethiopian; Floral, stone fruit, honey, jasmine, complex and more. The prize for the #1 farmer was 20 million pesos and he was obviously shocked and excited at the same time. He is a small farmer with only 2 hectors of mainly Caturra growing from 1800 meters up.
