Description

Panama Carmen Estate provides us with a complex aromatic profile. It offers hints of caramel, honey, fruit toasted grain and chocolate with a bright acidity and elegant mouth feel. A well balanced cup with tangy Key lime and juicy orange-like tones, satisfying the well-rounded palette.

Carmen Estate is among the most distinguished farms in Panama, producing many fine coffees that have accomplished a string of great success in green coffee competitions. Carmen Estate is Rainforest Alliance certified, meaning all coffee produced follow the sustainable ecological and socio-economic criteria developed by the Sustainable Agricultural Network, a coalition of independent, environment-focused non-governmental organization. Since 2003, Carmen Estate has placed within the top three of the Rainforest Alliance "Cupping for Quality" Competition.

In 1950 Efrain and Carmen Franceschi began cultivating Arabica coffee varieties on their estates. Today, their single estate and mill is managed by their sons and grandsons. They are sustainable coffee growers and exporters of very high quality green coffee, producing 1,200 bags of green coffee beans. Located in Volcan Valley at an altitude of 1750 meters; latitude 8°49’25’’N; longitude 82°37’55’’W.

The valley is considered the most important area among the mountainous and shade grown coffee plantations of the Baru Volcano region in Panama. It is heavily influenced by its proximity to both the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean and the cool, frost free nights typical of the area are coupled with dry, sun drenched days which create optimal growing conditions.

Coffee Review scored Carmen Estate 91 points and described it as "a complex aromatic profile with hints of caramel, honey, fruit, toasted grains and chocolate. Bright, tangy acidity, with a full, elegant mouthfeel. A well balanced cup, tangy Key lime and juicy orange-like tones fade toward a round, satisfying sweetness. A clean aftertaste overall, with slight hints of melted milk chocolate lingering in the long finish."

Here's a Klatchtastic comment from Teresa:
The Panama Carmen Estate 1750 Reserve Coffee is the best coffee I've ever had. While I am not an expert by any means, I've tried many Panama Coffees from roasters around the country and they were great, but yours is fantastic. I look forward to having my cup of Klatch Panama Carmen Estate every day.

This coffee was SPECTACULAR December 2, 2010
Reviewer: Daniela from New York, NY
It was without a doubt one of the best coffees I have EVER, EVER had. I guess the best endorsement came from my boyfriend who is super-fussy. He is actually a very sweet guy but for some reason about a MILLION TIMES fussier than I am about coffee... Klatch hit a home run with him. He rarely gives a coffee an A+. Usually his reaction is a sober "it's good" and after I say "what do you MEAN "it's good??'" he says "It's O-kay" and when I say "What do you mean "just O-kay?!?!?" he says "Well, it just doesn't have much going on!" WELL...the Klatch Panama not only got a heartfelt "This coffee is EXCELLENT" from him but he practically wrote a sonnet and sang an aria in its honor. When I took the first sip I knew I was having something really out of the ordinary---you just know from the first sip that it is not a coffee that is easily topped.

This is a very interesting and complex coffee. The high altitude growing conditions and rich volcanic soil imparts something unique to this coffee. Carmen Estate takes great care in producing quality beans and it shows.
