This intense little peaberry is packed with flavors. Along with a nice balance of body and acidity, this spicy bean’s wild side features Cinnamon, Mint and Green Apple. A unique, medium roast with a distinct flavor that cannot be missed.
The Kilimanjaro Plantation is located on the rich savannahs underlying Mt. Kilimanjaro with altitudes from 1050 to 1400 meters above sea level. It benefits from red volcanic soil, a constant water source from glaciers, rain fed rivers and springs, and a unique mountain climate due to its proximity to the “Roof of Africa”.
These exceptional environmental conditions combined with state-of-the art technology, coffee expertise and attention to quality allows the Kilimanjaro Plantation to produce one of the finest sun-dried Genuine Kilimanjaro Fully Washed Arabica coffees. Their focus on quality also extends to their commitment to sustainable production, social, and environmental practices.
Peaberry beans are small, round coffee beans with a cleft in the middle; they often have richer flavor than their oval- shaped counterparts, rendering a livelier cup with full body and distinguished aroma. Peaberry coffee is rare; only 5% of all coffee develop with this characteristic. As a result, peaberry coffee beans must be sorted from the rest.
Peaberry beans are widely reputed to roast better than flat berries, being said to roast more evenly, because their rounder shape minimizes sharp edges and allows the berries to roll about the roasting chamber more easily as well as because the alleged higher bean density may improve heat transfer in the roasting process. Either way, we just love this coffee!
Coffee Review Scored Our Tanzania Peaberry 90 points!
Notes: This sample consists entirely of peaberries, a kind of bean that results when the coffee fruit develops only a single, oval bean rather than the usual pair of flat-sided beans. Peaberries produce a somewhat different (often better) cup than normal beans from the same crop, from which they may or may not be separated during grading. For reasons that are not entirely clear, Tanzania is particularly associated with its peaberry grades. Blind assessment: Delicately intense. Rose-like flowers, cardamom, honey, a savory carob-like chocolate in aroma and cup. Soft but drying acidity; lively, lightly creamy-textured mouthfeel. Some flavor persists in a sweet though drying finish.
Who should drink it: Coffee lovers interested in sampling a distinctive version of an important historical coffee type. Botanical variety is not specified, but this sample tasted to us as though it brought some heirloom East Africa Bourbon or SL28 character to the cup.
