Carmen Estate is among the most distinguished farms in Panama, producing many fine coffees that have accomplished a string of great success in green coffee competitions. Carmen Estate is Rainforest Alliance certified, meaning all coffee produced follow the sustainable ecological and socio-economic criteria developed by the Sustainable Agricultural Network, a coalition of independent, environment-focused non-governmental organization. Since 2003, Carmen Estate has placed within the top three of the Rainforest Alliance "Cupping for Quality" Competition.
In 1950 Efrain and Carmen Franceschi began cultivating Arabica coffee varieties on their estates. Today, their single estate and mill is managed by their sons and grandsons. They are sustainable coffee growers and exporters of very high quality green coffee, producing 1,200 bags of green coffee beans. Located in Volcan Valley at an altitude of 1750 meters; latitude 8°49’25’’N; longitude 82°37’55’’W.
The valley is considered the most important area among the mountainous and shade grown coffee plantations of the Baru Volcano region in Panama. It is heavily influenced by its proximity to both the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean and the cool, frost free nights typical of the area are coupled with dry, sun drenched days which create optimal growing conditions.
