The traditional, award winning Esmeralda Special comes from an area in Panama known as Jaramillo. At Klatch Coffee we have the Mario Carnival, harvested during peak month of February from the world famous coffee estate, Hacienda La Esmeralda. This estate is the holder of three online coffee auction records, once when it sold for $21 dollars a pound on June 29th, 2004, again on May 30, 2006 when it sold for $50.25 a pound and in May 2007 when it sold for $130 a pound.
Mike visits the Peterson Family every year and this year was no different. This past March Mike cupped an assortment of coffees at Hacienda La Esmeralda but nothing compared to the sophistication of the Mario. Mike's on site cupping notes described this coffee as - floral [ jasmine ] and bergamot, elegant, balanced, classic, rich, full, complex, dark berries, juicy body, savory, well integrated acidity backed with full sweetness. Likewise, Klatch's Esmeralda Mario Pascua crop from 2008 received a 94 points from Ken Davids from Coffee Review.
