This extra large bean (also known as "the elephant bean") from Nicaragua offers a prolific fusion of maple, nut tones, honey and chocolate brownie combined with dried apricot in aroma and cup.

This coffee varietal is a mutation of Typica coffee (In a good way). The Maragogype coffee plant is large and is taller than either Bourbon or Typica. Production is low, but the seeds are very large. Maragogype adapts best between 2,000-2,500 feet. The cup characteristics are highly appreciated in certain coffee markets.

Origin: Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua

Notes: Maragogipe (Maragojipe in Spanish; also spelled Maragogype) is a variety of Arabica first discovered growing near the Brazilian town of the same name. It is a seldom-grown variety that produces enormous beans.

Blind assessment:Intricate, richly pungent: chocolate fudge, spicy oak, wild berry, faint mango-like fruit and night-blooming flowers in aroma and cup. Soft, sweetly tart acidity; full velvety mouthfeel. The finish is berry-toned, with a rounded chocolaty sweetness.

Who should drink it: Usually the rare Maragogipe wows us with its giant beans but disappoints in the cup. This lot, however, displays an interesting and impressive sensory profile, making it an appealing buy both for the coffee curious and those simply interested in a satisfying and unusual cup.
