Though only twenty-six years of age, Heather Perry has fifteen years of experience in the coffee industry. She began her coffee career at the age of eleven by washing dishes and sweeping floors in her parent’s coffeehouse. By the age of fifteen, Heather was working behind the espresso machine and experimenting with different drinks. Since her first shot of espresso, Heather has continued to improve and hone her skills behind the bar.
Over the past years, Heather has expanded her knowledge on all aspects of the coffee industry. She participates in coffee cupping, roasting, and espresso blend development for Klatch Roasting in Upland, CA. Her experience includes working with farmers from Brazil, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and other countries. Heather is a espresso machine technician having attended classes at ESI in Seattle and Nuova Simonelli in Southern California.
Most notably, Heather has participated in barista competitions and currently holds several titles including 2007 and 2003 United States Barista Champion plus the 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 Western Regional Champion. In Tokyo she finished 2nd in the world at the 2007 World Barista Championships. She has also made appearances on many TV shows including What’s Hot What’s Cool on the Food Network and BIG on the Discovery Channel where her name was put in the Guinness Book of World Records for building the world's largest espresso machine. Moreover, Heather is a spokesperson for 'Got Milk?' She was also recently named “The Ultimate Barista” and has since been challenged six times, including two head to head victories over other Ultimate Baristi, remaining undefeated.
Heather is currently the Director of Training and Consulting at Klatch Coffee. She recently established the Heather Perry’s Best Barista Training and manages Klatch Coffee’s Southern California coffeehouses. Heather trained the Costa Rican Barista Champion and assisted in organizing the first Costa Rican Barista Championship. She is the Master of Ceremonies for the Millrock Latte Art Competition hosted by Coffee Fest and World Barista Championship founded by the Specialty Coffee Association. She is also a judge for the Sterling Signature Beverage Competition and consults for many companies on a national and international level. She just currently completed a consulting project with Givaudan Japan, were she lead a focus group to challenge the flavors of the coffee culture in Asia.
Outside Klatch Coffee Heather donates much of her time to the Specialty Coffee Association of America. She held the position of Chair, for the Barista Guild of America, during her time on the BGA Heather helped to write curriculum for, and launch, the association’s first Barista Certification program. Heather is a Credentialed BGA Level 1 Examiner, as well as, Credentialed Lead Instructor.
Heather graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in International Business and Marketing.
