New Orleans NCA and UBC Wrap Up Report
By Heather Perry
This past weekend I was fortunate enough to be a part of the National Coffee Association (NCA) Centennial Convention in New Orleans. The weekend started off with a parade down the streets of New Orleans to the Board of Trade where we were treated to a traditional spread of muffalettas, po'boys, and a crawfish boil. One of the great things about the NCA since this convention is smaller, they really allow for a lot of time to socialize and get to meet new people.
While Friday was a great time, Saturday I had work to do. I was at the NCA as a participant in the Ultimate Barista Challenge (UBC). We won the Best of Brew Challenge as well as the Cocktail Challenge, both utilizing a French Press. The coffee I chose for Best of Brew was our FTO Ethiopian Gedeo Worka. Bringing such a unique coffee with its distinct sweet berry notes can be risky but I just love a coffee that makes a statement and the Worka really does. It is not a coffee easily forgotten and the judges agreed giving me the win.
The second competition was cocktail, where I used our fairly new Rwanda in a homemade Hot Buttered Rum. Even though my competitor was a barista by day and bartender by night, the judges were wowed by the balance in the cup. Stay tuned for my Hot Buttered Rum cocktail recipe at www.klatchroasting.com/recipes, hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as the judges.
Saturday night I celebrated at another fantastic party held in the beautiful historic garden district of New Orleans. The party was another great opportunity to meet new friends and reconnect with old. It was a great trip but I had an early flight Sunday morning and was off to Cincinnati for my next adventure.
