Coffee Fest Chicago Wrap Up

by HEATHER PERRY

I just got back from Coffee Fest Chicago and what a great show full of amazing competitions. The show started Friday with the first day of the Latte Art Competition where we narrowed the field down from 64 to 32 competitors. I then spent the afternoon judging the Best New Product where I saw new products such as a new Coffee Body Soap line, including shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and body scrub, as well as a Seasonal Espresso.

Saturday was another long day full of competitions. I started by emceeing the Latte Art Competition where we narrowed our field of competitors down to 16, and then moved right over to emceeing the North Central Barista Competition and Brewers Cup. Brewers Cup is a new competition that gives baristas the opportunity to serve hand brewed cups of coffee to a panel of three judges. The first day all the competitors use the same coffee, and then in the Finals they get to use their own coffee. The scoring is based on a modified Q Grader Cupping Score Sheet, and the judges are all Licensed Q Graders. This competition will also be at the Western Regional Barista Competition in 2 weeks, and look for some Klatch Baristas to participate.

Sunday was by far the most exciting day! The Latte Art Competition was so exciting and we saw some amazing pours and upsets. First place went to Ryan Soeder, while Kristen Warrenfells took second, the highest finish for a woman. We then moved right into the Brewers Cup Finals and the North Central Finals. The first day of the Brewers Cup the baristas just serve their coffee, while in the Finals they get to actually do a presentation and get the opportunity to talk about their coffees. It worked out well in the Brewers Cup took place in between competitors of the North Central. After a long day of competition Jonathon Jarrow took first place in the Brewers Cup while Ryan Knapp took first in the barista competition, with BGA Chair Scott Lucey taking second and BGA Executive Council member Trevor Corlett took third.

All in all a great weekend of competition on hanging out with friends new and old. Next up, the Western Regional Barista Competition.
